Autism Spectrum Disorders: Keys to Success in the Community
Wednesday, November 3 • 8:00 – 11:30 a.m.
Fees: $65 for IECA Member Consultants / $75 for all others
Assistant Professor of Psychiatry at Indiana University, Dr. Craig Erickson, will discuss potential issues that
present particularly in higher functioning persons with autism spectrum disorders (ASDs) that may inhibit an individuals ability to maximize educational, vocational, and other community opportunities. He will review aspects of the diagnosis and treatment of ASDs with a focus on how these factors impact success in community settings. Emphasis will be placed on best practice treatment guidelines for this population with an eye on how to best measure treatment success. Dr. Erickson will also discuss the transition to boarding school and college and how you can help to ensure success for these students on that level.
Social Networking and New Media for the Educational Consultant
(for consultants with a beginners knowledge of social media)
Wednesday, November 3 • 8:00 – 11:30 a.m.
Fees: $65 for IECA Member Consultants / $75 for Non-Member Educational Consultants
You keep hearing you should probably be on Facebook, and maybe even open your own page. Or maybe you’ve already done that but you haven’t really used it as a way to promote your consulting practice or connect
with client families. You’re also hearing about the incredible power of blogs—both your own and others’--as well as LinkedIn, Flickr, and Twitter, and it all feels so overwhelming. In this session, led by IECA Executive Director Mark Sklarow (joined by other experts), we’ll walk through what every consultant SHOULD be doing relative to new media and how such efforts can produce a great result in keeping contact with current clients and in attracting new ones.
Speed Meetings: One-on-One Meetings Between Consultants and Traditional Boarding Schools
School Fee: $175 per school; Educational Consultant Fee: $35 (100% of the $35 consultants' fee will be refunded after attending all speed meeting appointments).
Registration for the speed meetings will be conducted through the online registration page.
At the last two IECA conferences we added an opportunity for schools and consultants to share information in a more relaxed, quiet, and interactive atmosphere. Due to its success, we are pleased to bring back the “Traditional Boarding School Speed Meetings” as a pre-conference event on Wednesday morning, November 3, 2010. During the session, up to 40 traditional day and boarding school representatives will have the chance to meet with one or two consultants for a seven-minute private sharing session. After seven minutes the consultants will shift and the next seven-minute session will begin.
Each consultant will meet with approximately 20 schools and each school will meet with about 20 consultants. The final piece of the program will provide for an exclusive networking opportunity to ensure all attendees get to meet each other. A special packet with detailed information on participating schools will be distributed. As a pre-conference event, interested schools and consultants will need to apply for participation. Participating school representatives must be registered for the conference. Up to two speed participants per school are permitted.
Therapeutic Program Showcases
You talk, we listen! A recent survey of therapeutic programs expressed a significant interest in the return of Program Showcases on Saturday morning. For those who did not attend the showcases in Baltimore or San Francisco, these sessions will allow us to feature dozens of programs for brief ‘introductory presentations’ to consultants and fellow program representatives. Given the format, these will not be exhaustive in nature but rather 4-5 minutes to explain the program’s mission, approach, fees, and highlights. Our hope is that these showcase mini-presentations will expose attendees to programs they have not used in the past and may allow for follow up after the conference. Attendees will receive contact information and a data sheet for each showcase’s featured programs to aid in future contact. There is no fee for programs to participate, but they must be registered conference attendees.
IECA Semiannual Conferences
IECA's semi-annual conferences are attended by consultants, school, college and program admissions officers, administrators and staff, and related service companies. Conferences feature thought-provoking and informative workshops and discussions led by leaders in their fields including specialists in educational trends, college admissions and boarding school issues, adolescent development, learning differences, and emotional disorders and treatments. Continuing education hours are available. Full and half-day pre-conference trainings and campus tours are typically offered. Our two-hour "Information Swaps" are College, School & Program Fairs that allow for increased networking among consultants and admissions/program representatives. And our Vendor Hall allows attendees to visit the exhibits of companies who do not work directly with students, but who provide related resources (i.e. publications, software, equipment, financing, etc.).
